In the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, teenagers and people in their twenties have ended the myth that bingo is a pastime for senior citizens only. In fact, the majority of youngsters in the country choose this game to spend their nights out in town with their friends.
“This is the one game that brings all the ages together in Cyprus,” commented Nikos, the doorman at a Nicosia bingo club. This venue is inside a building that used to be a cinema and that now looks like a miniature version of a casino with high-end technology, including flat screens and digital boards.
When asked about their hobby, young people say they are not gambling, just having fun. “I came with my friends,” 20-year-old Effi Christou said. “This is modern and fun.” The owners of the clubs also insist that bingo games for youngsters are just good and clean fun.
In order to follow the bingo theme, restaurants at the clubs offer “Bingo Jackpot Burgers” and “Bingo Platters” in their menu, plus a wide variety of drinks, coffee and MTV music that helps create a relaxed atmosphere.
